At the Yacht Club de Monaco’s Captains’ Forum, Captain G. Mark Miller of Greenwater Marine Sciences Offshore (GMSO) presented Charting the Unknown: Passive Data Collection as an Elegant Extension of Your Exploration, offering a forward-looking perspective on how private yachts can contribute to ocean knowledge. As part of the How to Follow Heroes: The Intersection of Science Yachting and Exploration panel, Miller outlined how discreet, automated technologies can collect data on seafloor mapping, ocean conditions, acoustics, and marine ecosystems during normal operations, requiring minimal crew involvement. The session highlighted a simple but powerful idea: that every voyage has the potential to quietly contribute to scientific understanding. Since its founding in 2007, the Captains’ Forum has brought together leading voices across yachting and exploration to examine the sector’s evolution and its growing intersection with science.
